Different elements can contribute to defining similar mutual relationships, but in the urban context of today's cities and despite the great abundance of material goods that characterizes them, it is difficult to identify such relationships. In order to revitalize such an environment, I believe it would be appropriate to also reconsider the primitive, fundamental meaning that a pillar or a wall can take on. A planted pole draws from its verticality a symbolic meaning that architecture has been able to recognize for a long time. The column therefore has a symbolic meaning and together with the wall defines a space. I do not at all set out to compare walls or columns or to argue the superiority of the former; what I am thinking of is a way of operating based on the rhetorical relationship of wall and column.
In my work, walls have the function of identifying spaces that are physically and psychologically isolated from the outside world; they cut moments of the sky, sunlight, wind and landscape and allow the architecture to represent this continuous display of power.
The more austere a wall is, austere to the point of appearing completely cold, the more it communicates with us. It can appear like a sharp weapon that threatens us, or like a mirror that confusingly reflects the landscape and the sun's rays. The light that illuminates a corner or gathers in the darkness is very different from direct light, but as time passes these lights mix and make the space more significant.
