An apartment in a historic building in the monumental center of the city of Rome.

  • This assignment involved the renovation of a building with several additions dating back to the 1960s, located in the historic center of Rome.
The client's goal was to create a building that would serve as both residence and workspaces, as well as relaxation areas.
The design uses vertical axes to divide the building into different types of spaces, including service areas, circulation areas, main zones, and outdoor areas, establishing a specific spatial and functional sequence as the owners move within the building. Furthermore, the horizontal sequence of levels differentiates the sleeping, living, and working areas. These horizontal and vertical planes create a three-dimensional map of the house and its functions.
At the center of the house is a large, full-height vertical void that serves as the main circulation space, connecting the surrounding spaces in a flexible and dynamic manner, typical of contemporary living. This void is a point of spatial, visual, and functional connection, where public and private spaces, daytime and nighttime activities, and internal and external flows meet and intersect. It also exposes the intimacy of domestic life, revealing the interior life of the home.
Today, years later, we can say that the project's theme was a precursor to a need we had already sensed in 2004, and which has now become a necessity: that of merging private living spaces with private work spaces. New and interesting projects have emerged on this theme.
